GRR Review: Lucky Penny by L A Cotton

Lucky Penny by L A. Cotton is basically a tale of star-crossed lovers, who fell for each other as children, then circumstances separated them, one went on to riches, one went on to rags. Then they meet each other again...  It is an extremely emotional tale, with emotional wounds on both sides.

Penny's parents were killed in a car crash when she was twelve, and she survived an ordeal that cannot be talked about at fourteen. Her only solace was Blake, at the foster home. They promised to come back for each other should one leave first. Then Blake left one day without even a goodbye, when Penny was sixteen. And he never came back. Penny left the foster home at eighteen, determined to make a living by herself. Five years later barely getting by as a waitress / catering staff, she chose to go work a summer at Camp Chance, to help foster kids like herself... and Blake was there... Penny had survived multiple ordeals, but giving her heart to the man who already broke her once may not be something she can survive...
This book really left me misty-eyed, as Penny's heartbreaks are all described in detail, and there are suggestions of abuse that may make some readers queasy.  But Penny is like the unsinkable Molly Brown. She's not as cherry, but she refused to go down and give up.  Blake turned out to be much lamer, but he had his reasons (which will be revealed).  Add Blake's uncle and aunt who tried to force them apart, and you have some exciting scenes with a lot of torment for the characters and people finally grow a spine to take charge of their future rather than be pushed around.
